18 May International Museums Day
May 18 is ICOM’s International Museums Day and Museums and Galleries have been invited to unite by posting an online expression of our shared belief in the power of ideas and object to nourish our lives.
House Curator Lauretta Zilles has chosen this small, yet captivating Loetz vase made of iridescent glass with its unique pewter butterfly decoration, which is a favourite of mine from Buda’s House collection.
Its soft yet striking two-tone lustre of blue and yellow to me reflect the colours of light at dawn and dusk.
The dimpled shoulders suggest the beauty that can be found in nature’s imperfections.
Lastly, the butterflies are a symbol of life, endurance, change and hope: A reminder to us that life goes on.

Garden Curator Jill Hildebrandt has chosen the Bunya Pine in our heritage garden, Araucaria bidwillii.
“I love the sheer size and symmetry of the tree and its amazing foliage. It is such a delight when the cones start dropping and we get to see their incredible Fibonacci design.”
COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER’s PICK – DOROTHY LEVINY’s SUNDIAL
Communications manager Vivienne Hamilton has chosen Dorothy Leviny’s sundial to share.
“To me, Dorothy was the embodiment of living the life that makes you happy. While working to support herself and contributing to her local community, she was also a passionate gardener, artistically prolific and was a great proponent of the Arts and Crafts movement. Most unconventionally for the day, she went on to develop an interest in metalwork and attended RMIT at the age of 60! She has works in the National Gallery of Victoria collection and many stunning pieces that you can see when you come and visit. The sundial sits right in front of the main entrance to the house overlooking the cypress hedge and is a beautiful melding of her practical skills, artistic flair and passion for the garden.
