Buda is well-known for the work of Ernest Leviny and his daughters – from silversmithing through to embroidery and photography, the Leviny’s were an extraordinary family. Their discerning eye for modern artists brought them in touch with such talented artists as Margaret Preston and Jessie Traill.

But through marriages and close friendships with other prominent families in Castlemaine, the Leviny daughters also knew most of the key women who were responsible for the development of women and girls’ education in Victoria and New South Wales both at secondary and university level.

This talk will outline all those connections and show how the Leviny’s played a hitherto unacknowledged part in drawing together those threads.

Dr. Mandy Leveratt has a PhD in late nineteenth and early twentieth century feminist and social history from the ANU. For most of her career she worked in the not-for-profit sector undertaking policy and research work.
