SUMMARY:Connect the dots – The Levinys in Castlemaine
DESCRIPTION:Explore the connections of the artistic Leviny family to the places that were significant to their lives and loves in Castlemaine\, in a brand new walking or driving tour. Come for a Mother’s Day afternoon tea and discover their artistic connections or attend a life drawing class. \n\nThe Australian Heritage Festival is the country’s largest community-driven celebration of heritage. \n\nFor more than 40 years the National Trust has connected the nation through the Australian Heritage Festival celebrations. \nReturning in April and May with the theme Connections\, the 2024 festival will celebrate the rich and diverse stories of our nation\, strengthen cultural and historical ties and encourage the community to forge new bonds. It acknowledges our link to people\, places and the past\, and the enduring connections that will shape the future of heritage. \n\nBuda Castlemaine is one of the few historic houses which truly bears the mark of its former owners\, the Leviny family. An accredited museum\, it features the original belongings and art collection of the talented Leviny’s who resided there for 118 years. \nCome and visit and learn of Hungarian gold and silversmith Ernest Leviny and his five talented daughters and their Arts and Crafts influenced collection\, then grab a map and explore their wider connections in the town of Castlemaine with a newly developed walking or driving tour. General Admission applies to obtain map. No bookings required. \nOn Sunday April 21\, you can participate in a Life Drawing session in the house and garden\, with costumed life models and both a lovely morning tea and lunch. Bookings required. \nOn Mother’s Day\, Sunday May 12\, join us for an afternoon tea at 2pm\, with a glass of bubbly and hear a special talk by Christine Lloyd on what connected the Leviny women with the artists Louie Riggall and Jessie Traill. Family\, friendship\, service and art all play a part. Bookings required. \n[vc_row][vc_column width=’1/3′][/vc_column][vc_column width=’1/3′][/vc_column][vc_column width=’1/3′][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Pursuits of Passion and Principle
DESCRIPTION:Buda Exhibition during the Castlemaine State Festival and beyond\nAustralian Arts & Crafts Jewellery and Decorative Arts\nfrom public and private collections\nThis year Buda is presenting a special exhibition of Australian Arts and Crafts jewellery and decorative arts ‘Pursuits of Passion and Principle’  to complement the existing collection of original artworks and ornamental pieces in the house and garden belonging to the Leviny family. \nThe Arts and Crafts Movement\, begun by William Morris in Britain in the mid-1800s\, greatly influenced the Leviny daughters who lived at Buda. Their passion to decorate the family home with items both ‘beautiful and useful’ is still a feature of the house interior today. \nThis Victorian-style ‘gentleman’s villa’ house with its impressive 1.2 hectare (3 acre) garden\, was owned by Hungarian goldsmith and jeweller\, Ernest Leviny. In the early 1900s the interior of the home was transformed by his daughters\, who infused their great passion for the British Arts and Crafts Movement (influenced by William Morris and his followers) on the internal fittings and décor throughout the house. Many of the Leviny daughters’ original handcrafted items are still a feature of the house interior today. \nOf further interest is the remnant collection of silvermithing items and jewellery designs created by Ernest Leviny\, along with a number of original Australian artworks\, decorative objects and handcrafts collected by the Leviny during their lives. Buda is on the registers of the National Estate and Heritage Victoria\, and is also an Accredited Museum. \nCastlemaine State Festival 23-31 March 2019 \nPursuits of Passion and Principal 23 March – 19 May \n\nDeer Enamelwork Box \n \nBrooch by Rhoda Wager \n  \n\n \nHere is a taste of what is on offer by our curator.\n[vc_video link=’https://youtu.be/G_7rwFPLfXc’] \n\n
