SUMMARY:Buda 'Unlocked' House Tours 2019
DESCRIPTION:  \nTraditional Arts Fair – Sunday 24th November 2019 \nNew tours – An exclusive opportunity\nBook your house tour to gain some special insights into \nErnest Leviny\, family life and the unique art collection at Buda \nTickets: $8 per person (Tour numbers limited) \nBOOK NOW\nor on the day at the booking table \nTOURS SCHEDULE: \n11.00 am         A Happy Family:  The Levinys’ childhood memories growing up at Buda \nOn this tour you will be introduced to Buda as a family home during the late 1800s\, through the eyes of the Leviny children. Hilda was the youngest of the ten Leviny children\, and was in her mid-nineties when interviewed about family life at Buda\, from which many wonderful stories and anecdotes are shared. Buda also has the diaries of two other sisters\, along with a large number of family photographs and items within the house which bring the family home to life. \n12.00 pm      A Golden Opportunity:  Ernest Leviny’s Story \nA goldsmith and jeweller in the European centres of Budapest\, Paris and London before venturing out to the Australian goldfields in the early 1850s\, Ernest Leviny’s story is one of optimism\, adventure and opportunity along the way. His success as a businessman in the pioneering days of Castlemaine set him up for life as a retired gentleman by age 45 years\, going on to own a desirable suburban villa with a large garden\, marry and raise a family of ten children at Buda. \n1.00 pm        Art Influences and Influencers: A Focus on the Buda Collection \nThe Leviny children were raised by their parents to appreciate the arts and culture from an early age. The daughters\, in particular\, were immersed in fine and applied arts as well as handicrafts during the 1890s and early 1900s. They maintained a life-long interest as both makers and collectors of art\, with a circle of friends that included artists amongst them. The Buda art collection reflects the women’s interest in mostly Australian\, and particularly the work of women artists of the early twentieth century – with a number of remarkable gems to be found amongst them. \n2.00 pm        Buda – A Family Home:   A General Tour \nBuda is a distinctive family home dating from the Castlemaine goldrush days up until 1980 when the last surviving child of Ernest and Bertha Leviny died and it became a house museum. The property encapsulates the aspirations\, ideals\, lifestyle and changes that took place over the 118 years of one family’s occupation at Buda. This is considerably enriched by the rare and intact collection of the Leviny’s personal belongings that remain within the house. Enjoy a step back in time!

For this year’s lecture\, Katie is going to speak about the individual’s role in agriculture and sustainability. \nIn 2018 she and husband Hugh started the Harcourt Organic Farming Co-op (HOFC)\, a new farming model which has created a succession pathway for Hugh and Katie while allowing them to stay on the farm. \nThe new model also provides access to farmland for emerging farmers and has increased the overall productivity and profitability of the farm. \nSince leasing the orchard out under the new co-op structure\, Katie and Hugh have focused on their Grow Great Fruit business\, teaching organic fruit growing to backyard growers throughout Australia with more than 50 online short courses and the GGF Home-study Program. \nThe co-op currently has five members (Tellurian Fruit Gardens\, Sellar Farmhouse Dairy\, Gung Hoe Growers\, Carr’s Organic Fruit Tree Nursery and Grow Great Fruit)\, with plans to add more members with compatible farming ideas. \nWhile each business is responsible for their own sales\, part of the purpose of HOFC is co-marketing\, through a number of different outlets including a Farm Shop\, a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) scheme\, and in an exciting new development\, a collaboration with Castlemaine Farmers Market to start a new weekly mid-week market. \nKatie also drives the ‘Business Ninja’ program within HOFC to provide members with business skills. In 2015 she won the RIRDC Rural Women’s Award for Victoria\, and is active in the community as a board director of both the Maldon and District Community Bank\, and Melbourne Farmers Markets. \nThe dinner includes a glass of bubbly on arrival followed by a delicious and seasonal three course Thai meal prepared by our wonderful new supporter Duang Tengtrirat. Duang loves to cook. This passion of 60 years started in northern Thailand and followed her to various parts of the US and now to Chewton. Cooking is her utmost delight; it is her craft and she will share it with us on Saturday 14th September. \nPlease let us know if you have any dietary requirements. \nBOOK NOW

SUMMARY:Mother's Day High Tea
DESCRIPTION:Mother’s Day High Tea and special afternoon of music\n  \nFeaturing Blue Tango – Unique arrangements of Jazz flavoured classic pop songs\n  \n‘ Why don’t we take a little piece of summer sky\,hang it in a tree For that’s the way to start to make a pretty world for you and for me’\n\n\nOur High Tea includes\n\nSparkling wine on arrival\nHigh tea\, savouries and sweets served to your table\nLeaf tea and brewed coffee\nOptional guided tour of the house and garden\n\n  \n$45 ADULT $42 CONC\n$40 FRIENDS OF BUDA\n\n  \n\n[vc_video link=’http://www.youtube.com/v/u-qpeIrTFYY’] Blue Tango is Lynne Gough (vocals and percussion) and Dave Richard (vocals and guitar). No other sounds (they minimalist vulnerability!). Their name comes from the million-selling instrumental hit of 1952. It was a tango in blues form played by a classical orchestra– a great example of the rich mixture typical of great pop music. So Blue Tango points to their love of jazzy popular music. They see ourselves as part of the current ‘retro chic’ phenomenon which includes Diana Krall\, Harry Connick Jr\, Norah Jones\, Michael Buble and the huge success of the Rod Stewart Great American Songbook series of CDs. They produce interesting\, original guitar/vocal arrangements of classic pop songs. \nBOOK NOW

SUMMARY:Pursuits of Passion and Principle
DESCRIPTION:Buda Exhibition during the Castlemaine State Festival and beyond\nAustralian Arts & Crafts Jewellery and Decorative Arts\nfrom public and private collections\nThis year Buda is presenting a special exhibition of Australian Arts and Crafts jewellery and decorative arts ‘Pursuits of Passion and Principle’  to complement the existing collection of original artworks and ornamental pieces in the house and garden belonging to the Leviny family. \nThe Arts and Crafts Movement\, begun by William Morris in Britain in the mid-1800s\, greatly influenced the Leviny daughters who lived at Buda. Their passion to decorate the family home with items both ‘beautiful and useful’ is still a feature of the house interior today. \nThis Victorian-style ‘gentleman’s villa’ house with its impressive 1.2 hectare (3 acre) garden\, was owned by Hungarian goldsmith and jeweller\, Ernest Leviny. In the early 1900s the interior of the home was transformed by his daughters\, who infused their great passion for the British Arts and Crafts Movement (influenced by William Morris and his followers) on the internal fittings and décor throughout the house. Many of the Leviny daughters’ original handcrafted items are still a feature of the house interior today. \nOf further interest is the remnant collection of silvermithing items and jewellery designs created by Ernest Leviny\, along with a number of original Australian artworks\, decorative objects and handcrafts collected by the Leviny during their lives. Buda is on the registers of the National Estate and Heritage Victoria\, and is also an Accredited Museum. \nCastlemaine State Festival 23-31 March 2019 \nPursuits of Passion and Principal 23 March – 19 May \n\nDeer Enamelwork Box \n \nBrooch by Rhoda Wager \n  \n\n \nHere is a taste of what is on offer by our curator.\n[vc_video link=’https://youtu.be/G_7rwFPLfXc’] \n\n
