SUMMARY:Drawing Workshop with Mark Dober
DESCRIPTION:Mark Dober will  be conducting a drawing workshop at Buda\, on Sunday 3 November 2024. The 4 hour workshop runs from 12 noon to 4 pm. \nMark makes his paintings and drawings in the landscape. Since moving from Melbourne to Castlemaine in 2016\, his work has been mostly made at a variety of sites in this region.\nWorking on site he seeks to convey the experiential with directness and immediacy. His response comprises a blend of the observed and imagined. He views the organic relationship between looking and mark making as intrinsic to the meaning of his work — integrated expressions of a direct and tactile engagement with place. He wants the viewer to experience a sense of immersion by physically engaging in the activity of viewing that mirrors his own physical engagement when making the work. \nDescription of workshop \nWe will draw in the gardens of Buda. The intention is to make 3 drawings: \nThe first drawing will be in charcoal\, buiding the work with tone and mark making (and using the eraser). \nThe second drawing will be using two dry media – commencing with red/brown conte\, then progressing to charcoal (and using the eraser). This drawing is layered and well reveals the process of looking and construction. \nThe third drawing will be using black ink and a brush. The first application will be in light grey. The second application will be much more black. \nA set amount of time will be allocated to each drawing. You may not finish one or more of these drawings\, they are exercises in drawing techinique/method.  I will demonstrate at the commencement of each drawing. Where there is time left over\, you can either go back to completing a drawing\, or start a new one\, deciding what media to use and how to proceed. \nThis workshop will introduce you to different methods of obervational drawing\, using differing media in a purposeful way. It will expand your technical range and provide you with drawing skills that underpin.painting. While especially useful for artists with experience in drawing\, the workshop can also accomodate adults with little or no drawing experience. \nCost:  The workshop is $100. Included in the cost is the paper\, drawing boards\, and drawing materials that Mark will provide (you can bring your own paper/materials if you like). Additionally\, there will be a $10/$12 entry fee into Buda\, which you pay when you come to the workshop. \nPlease email Mark at – info@markdober.com – to book your participation. Closer to the time of the workshop he will call for payment. \nBOOK NOW\n  \n

SUMMARY:The 2025 Josine McEwan fundraising dinner
DESCRIPTION:Naturalistic approaches to designing vegetation in gardens and public landscapes. John Rayner\n\nCome and join us for a 3 course winter meal for the annual Josine McEwan fund-raising dinner with Melbourne University Associate Professor John Rayner.\nBOOK NOW\nThe late Josine McEwan was a volunteer in the garden at Buda Historic Home & Garden in Castlemaine.  Knowing how important Buda is to the region and wanting it to remain open for future generations to enjoy\, Josine left a generous bequest to Buda when she passed away in 2006. Since 2007 an annual lecture and fundraising dinner has been conducted in Josine’s memory. \nBased at the Burnley Campus of the University of Melbourne for more than 35 years\, John is a teaching and research academic with a focus in urban horticulture\, particularly the design\, use and management of plants. His research in green infrastructure has helped develop the industry in Australia and in collaboration with multiple industry and government partners produced more than 100 publications and reports. Over the last decade John has helped lead and expand the Woody Meadow Project (https://woodymeadow.unimelb.edu.au/). He is also a keen gardener and in his spare time\, together with his wife\, he nurtures and tortures plants on their one-hectare garden in the Dandenong Ranges outside Melbourne. \nThis year’s lecture presented by John focuses on naturalistic planting design incorporating gardens and landscapes he has visited internationally\, then his work in Australia (Woody meadows\, Flowery Swards)\, concluding with work in his own garden applying these principles. \n     \nThe dinner includes a glass of bubbly on arrival followed by a delicious and seasonal three course winter meal. \nPlease let us know by email if you have dietary requirements. \nMenu to be advised soon\nBOOK NOW\n

SUMMARY:High Tea with Rebecca Armitage
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Garden Room at Buda  for a delicious High Tea with author and journalist\, Rebecca Armitage. \n\n\nRebecca will be chatting about her debut novel\, The Heir Apparent – a Reece Witherspoon Book Club Pick in the US – and her career as a writer\, journalist and TV Producer. \nBOOK\n   \n\n\nAbout the Book: \n\n\nLexi Villiers is a 29-year-old Englishwoman doing her medical residency in Hobart\, working too hard\, worried about her bank balance\, and living with friends. It’s a good life\, and getting even better\, because as the dawn is breaking on New Year’s Day\, Lexi is about to kiss the man she loves for the very first time. \n\n\nBut by midnight\, everything will change. Because Lexi is in fact not an ordinary young woman. She is Princess Alexandrina\, third in line to the British throne – albeit estranged from the rest of her family and living in voluntary exile on the other side of the world. But following a terrible accident\, Lexi – the black sheep of her family and\, until this moment\, always destined to be the spare – is now the heir apparent\, first in line to the throne once her grandmother\, the elderly Queen\, dies. Called back to do her duty\, she arrives in London to a Palace riven with power plays and media leaks\, all the while guarding painful secrets of her own. Palace waters are treacherous\, rumours are rife\, and selling each other’s secrets is a family tradition. And with the Crown just within her grasp\, Lexi must choose what bonds she will keep … and what she is willing to leave behind. \n\n\n‘This engrossing debut … is filled with secrets\, scandals\, and a few unexpected twists\, including a forbidden and beautiful love story. Armitage’s writing is spectacular\, with rich dialogue and descriptions\, a vibrant depiction of the burden of duty versus personal freedom\, and unique insights into royal life.’  Booklist\, starred review \n\n\n‘For everyone wondering who’s going to be the next big thing on the Australian literary scene\, I have the answer: it’s Rebecca Armitage. SUMMARY:In the Company of Small Things
DESCRIPTION:New exhibitions invite audiences to slow down and look closer at Buda \nBuda Historic Home and Garden invites visitors to pause\, look closely and rediscover the beauty of detail with In the Company of Small Things — a series of intimate exhibitions and installations that celebrate observation\, craft and quiet wonder. \nFeaturing new works by local artists Dianne Longley and Clayton Tremlett\, the project re-imagines Buda’s historic house and garden through contemporary eyes\, revealing fresh stories hidden within familiar spaces. \nMaster printmaker Dianne Longley\, based in Trentham\, is renowned for her complex\, carefully balanced compositions that weave together cultural histories and diverse artistic techniques. Her intricately designed works unfold from a house exhibition grounded in Buda’s architecture and collection\, then extend gently into the garden itself. Two accompanying workshops will invite families and community members to draw inspiration from Longley’s practice and create their own thoughtful interpretations. \nCastlemaine printmaker and painter Clayton Tremlett brings a bold and playful energy to the historic Garden Pavilion. Known for his deeply researched practice and distinctive linocut portraiture\, Tremlett re-imagines old family portraits in vivid colour. His work — spanning wallpapers\, artist’s books\, collector cards and editioned prints — offers a contemporary lens on Australian history. A hands-on workshop will give participants the chance to create their own historically referenced works. \nAlongside the artists’ installations\, Buda’s Curators will unveil unexpected treasures from the site’s collection. Nineteenth-century botanical specimens\, nature studies\, sketchbooks and delicately crafted\, flora-inspired objects made by the Leviny family will form a series of small but powerful encounters. These will be experienced through exhibitions\, interpretive garden panels\, treasure hunts and nature journaling workshops. \nTogether\, the project honours the craft\, care and attention to detail that define both Buda and the distinct practices of each artist. Each work gently asks what we overlook in everyday life — and how wonder so often hides in plain sight. \nIn the Company of Small Things is a quiet act of reverence: for history\, for creative spirit\, and for the tiny gestures that connect us to place\, past and imagination. \n[vc_row][vc_column width=’1/3′][/vc_column][vc_column width=’2/3′] \nExhibition launch\nWine and Cheese\nHear from the Artists\nPreview the exhibition\nThursday March 19 @6pm\nPlease RSVP here\n[/vc_column][/vc_row]
